So you might want to have an extra available if you try this. By prying the motor open, you also risk bending and ruining it. However, there will be a bit more resistance in the bearings from cogging, and it will take a couple more mph of wind to set your anemometer spinning. Optionally, you can skip that entire step. Gently press the motor back together - if you go all the way back in now, the motor will bind and not spin freely! Gently pry the coils out using a flathead screwdriver. Gently tap the center bearing loose from the back using a Phillips screwdriver and small hammer. Place the bearing assembly upside down in a vise so it's suspended by the flange. For this project, we used the same ball bearing DC brushless PM motor as in our Easter Egg Anemometer, and we removed the coils to make it spin more freely.we just need the bearing for this project. You want it to spin as freely as possible, so you can get better response and also measure very low wind speeds. That being said, it’s fulfilled all my current needs, so I still think it’s a great option! (Though I will admit that I haven’t tried Todoist, the popular task list application.) Conclusion There’s a nice UI but less functionality than todo.txt. Taskade (U10, C6, N1): Just a todo list.I plan to use it for teaching, and the key shortcuts should make things easier. Miro (U7, C5, N1): A nice whiteboard with Zoom and Dropbox compatability. My side buttons can: navigate to other desktops, control the volume, open applications, exit out of windows, etc. Furthermore, you can hotkey to different layers, meaning the same button can be used for several different purposes. My mouse has side buttons, so this is especially useful. X-Mouse Button Control (U10, C6, N4): Reassign mouse button functions.Though from the limited tests I’ve run, the software seems good! I currently use Taskade, but I’m strongly considering transferring when I have time. todo.txt (U7, C5, N8): Control your todo list from anywhere: your browser, your phone, command line, etc.Spicetify (U8, C9, N4): Pretty useful! Customizable themes, no ads, group sessions without Premium, etc.I don’t use calendar much, but I hope to! gcalcli (U4, C6, N7): Google Calendar from command line. Why not just use the search engine in a browser anyway? Not as useful as I’d hoped it would be, but that might be because I don’t use CLI as much as I should. ddgr (U2, C6, N9): DuckDuckGo from command line. And many people use Discord so I don’t see why this wouldn’t be accessible to (almost) everyone. ![]() You can view deleted messages, which is pretty useful. ![]() ![]() Not because they are so similar, but because of their different approaches to zero-based budgeting. Completely web-based means it’s fully cross platform compatible and easily accessible from virtually anywhere with internet access, there’s also a pretty great iPhone app, and it’s all for free? Put all this together, and this takes the cake for the best Mac budgeting software.I have struggled to decide between YNAB-(which I really like)-and Banktivity. Mint – Free – Enter all your accounts into Mint and it’ll pull as much financial data as it can, back more years than you remembered, creating a pretty comprehensive list of personal financing trends and budgeting information. It has been recommended rather highly by friends that use it, and you can’t beat the free beta either, but nonetheless it is still beta software, so YMMV. It has an iPhone version that it syncs with too so that you can budget on the go. There’s also an iPhone version available for free! And yes that’s €14.99 – Euro’s not Dollars, which is about $22 at current exchange rates.ĬhaChing – Free beta – Since it’s in Beta it’s hard to know much about this app, but it looks like it’s developing into a promising contender. It’s currently in development but looks pretty stable and has a lot of personal budgeting features, you can also try it before you buy it with a free download, so definitely check this one out. If it has Apple’s stamp of approval, it’s probably a pretty great app although I have yet to test it myself. Squirrel – €14.99 – Free beta test – Squirrel won an Apple Design Award in 2008 for the best Mac OS X Leopard Student Product, which is no small feat. If you can put the appearance aside, then Budget could be a great software option for managing your finances. It’s certainly feature rich and full of stellar reviews, competitively priced, and has been around a while, but at a risk of sounding shallow, I just don’t think it LOOKS that good, especially compared to the some of the alternatives. Priced a bit cheaper than iBank, it’s definitely a good alternative, but again it’s Mac only.īudget – $39.95 – I have smart friends that swear by Budget, so apparently it’s a great app. The ‘envelope budgeting’ feature looks pretty nice and would certainly be useful. ![]() MoneyWell – $49.99 – MoneyWell is a lot like iBank, it’s feature rich and looks very attractive, it’s just a bit less well known. The main downside that I see is that it’s not really cross-platform compatible since it’s Mac only. From appearances alone, this app takes the cake (the screenshot above is iBank) and it’s also pretty feature rich. As an added bonus, it syncs with your iPhone so you can see all your budgets and finances on the road. You can easily import banking and finance data to help create a budget and track your finances and has a pretty cool feature that lets you visit online bank accounts through the app to import any data that otherwise wouldn’t be accessible. IBank – $59.99 – iBank is very much a Mac app, it’s very attractive, easy to use, has an intuitive interface, and, well, it just plain looks good. It’s cross-platform compatible which is also a bonus if you’re a recent switcher. It works very well as long as you’re willing to keep the data recent, and it’ll hook up to some online bank accounts (or you can import data). ![]() Quicken – $69.99 – almost everyone has heard of Quicken, it’s basically the industry standard for consumer budgeting software. ![]() ![]() But for $10 it’s going to offer a fast-paced game that will give you a few good laughs. ![]() This won’t be remembered 20 years down the line as that “oh wow” game. (We actually looked far more coordinated than we ever do in real life.) Or play the banjo! Play in a team round and you each get to be on camera, which was incredibly fun as fellow blogger Paul Roeber and I played the banjo and did a jig as if we planned it. Win a round, and you can do a jig as the camera focuses on you before the next round begins. To enhance the game, you get some gestures that you can program. This spot has a scarecrow and after you’ve held the spot for a while, it moves with a voice over asking “where’s the scarecrow gone?” Yes it is as funny as it sounds! And there’s a domination style round where you have to hold a spot longer than your opponents can. You can’t use weapons while running around with the chicken and everyone else is trying to kill you to get the chicken. There are also a handful of modes to play like “hold the chicken” where you have to run with a chicken for as long as possible. The one I like the most is the cemetery but the roadside stop-over is fun because passing cars can run you over! And I love a good wild west board. But if they are available… well, that’s a different kettle of fish.Īs you can tell from my choice of words, the game has voices that are exactly what you’re readin’: country farmers talkin’ as one would expect, stereotype and all! There are a handful of boards to play and between boards, you get to vote on the next one. Well that’s a problem, see? That limits the play-ability for me. So if they ain’t available… well, I just won’t play the doggone game. This means playtime, ya hear? But I don’t like to play with no young whippersnappers! I wants ta play with my own kids and friends. I’ve seen images of a deep sea diving helmet that I can wear, but I need to earn enough points to be able to move up in levels. ![]() I tried to make my character look a bit like me, but these are about as lifelike as the Wii’s Mii characters. See, here’s how they get ya: they give ya the ability to customize your character. The game moves with incredible speed and is insanely comical but really can only be played in multiplayer mode which is a limitation. There are other guns in the game, and I have a couple of favorites, but the shotgun is the main weapon of choice. Growing means having full ammo but grab a gun that just fell and you may only have one bullet. ![]() You start with a (surprise!) shotgun and when you die, your weapon falls and can grow. Deleting an empty APFS partition that I created was a major PIA involving many steps running Disk Utility in the GUI and Terminal (both were required). I'll give it a few days - I can always delete IMAP email on my iPad to have it gone from my Mac.Īdding an APFS partition is quite easy. I'm getting my email but can't send to Spam or delete. Yahoo email is having minor issues - can't tell if it's 10.13 or Yahoo. I keep my login in Notes so I can copy and paste on reboot. There are a number of OS bug fixes but none have affected me.ĭP is running faster on APFS. Perhaps, I updated to keep current with iOS 11 with its new storage sharing flexibility. Then again, things are humming along in Sierra so why fix it if it ain't broken? Anything earth shattering in High Sierra I just have to have? The lost license on reboot for DP is, of course, a deal breaker with High Sierra. So, apps like Illustrator, Oxygen XML Editor, and Finale, have some specific legacy functions (not even sure what they are, but probably file export to XML), that haven't been updated in years, and which therefore still depend on Apple's mothballed Java, which Apple does at least try to keep running on new OS updates knowing that this is the case. And even at that, you still had to depend on an installed Java. Apple's Java was "incomplete" in that it depended on some "special" files and so developers had to clone that file in a particular way in order to build desktop apps that were truly standalone. Java on the desktop is safe - it's in the browser where there can be issues, but that's also true of just about ANY browser technology. The main point is that Java 6 by Apple and Java 7+ (8, and soon 9) from Oracle deliberately live in different parts of the OS so that they won't ever conflict by trying to share dependencies, libraries, files, etc. ![]() I've written this up a gazillion times, but probably Mike covered everything - am too tired after so many BART delays tonight due to police actions and the like. ![]() You can use it to check for the latest build and download the update if old. JRE 8 only installs a Java Control Panel in System Preferences. Unless you want this, make sure you uncheck that option when installing. Unfortunately, the JRE 8 installer wants to add a setting that makes Yahoo! Your default search engine. Many web sites and some apps require it though you can set browsers to ask before using. The latest JRE 8 is downloaded from Oracle only. You want the 2015-001 version here.Ģ014-001 works in Yosemite and Mavericks only 2015-001 supersedes it. Otherwise, you want the JRE.Īlthough Apple cannot include it, they released a tweaked build that lets 32bit apps that require JRE 6 to run in Sierra and backwards (and High Sierra, too). The error messages usually say “Java Toolkit.” and are wrong unless you are a Java developer, then download the JDK. JRE (Java Runtime Environment) 6 is 32 bit only. Understand that and the rest of this makes sense. For that reason, neither Apple nor Microsoft are allowed to include it in the OS (with Apple, that means Mavericks on). SUN was bought by Oracle who now makes the rules concerning Java. ![]() ![]() ![]() :)Īre you looking for a stable server with a unique gameplay?
